Panafest and Emancipation (10 days)
PANAFEST (Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival) is a unique biennial international event launched in 1992. Targeted mainly at the African Diaspora and the international travel market, the event utilizes the historic and sombre environment provided by the Cape Coast Castle and its network of dungeons and large inner courtyard as a stage.
The event focuses on the story of Africans and our dispersion (the largest dispersion in human history), our struggles for freedom both in the New World (Emancipation and Civil Rights) and on the African continent (anti colonialism and independence). This event also provides an opportunity for African intellectuals to exchange ideas and stimulate interest in the African experience in the Diaspora.
Emancipation Day Celebrations (8 days)
Emancipation Day commemorates the significant date of 1st August. On this date in 1834, slavery and the slave trade were formerly abolished in most of the British Empire.
Slaves over 6 years were ‘designated’ as ‘apprentices’ and legally achieved full emancipation on 01 August, 1838.
Ghana is the first African country to celebrate Emancipation Day, beginning in 1998. In Ghana, Emancipation Day is celebrated every year.
Juneteenth Day / Black History Month (8 days)
Juneteenth marks the day freedom finally came to the last enslaved Black people. On June 19, 1865 some 2,000 union troops arrived in GalvestonBay, Texas.
The army announced that more than 250,000 enslaved blacks in the state, were freed by executive decree.
Black History Month, is also known as African-American History Month. It offers us an opportunity to celebrate Black history; black achievements and provides a fresh reminder to take stock of where systematic racism persists, and to bring into the limelight the people and organizations creating change. We will visit and walk through dungeons and sites to reconnect with our Ancestors and for renewal.
